House System Improvements Day 1 & 2

For anyone who may be curious, not much has changed around the school. The hallways in Ireland still smell like freshmen and lunch offerings are still eh. However, spending my project on campus is a littler eerie considering there are only about 5 seniors around, and juniors have started taking over the benches and pronto room.

Anyway, for those of you who don’t know, I will be spending my project working closely with Ms. Post to create new bylaws and brainstorm improvements for the house system. Some of the task’s Ms. Post assigned me to work on yesterday included reaching out to other schools with successful house systems via email, write up questions to ask them, begin an itinerary for the August House Leader Retreat, Write Job Descriptions for house leaders and faculty leaders, work on the giant relay and eventually start diving into statistical analysis of the survey data we gathered from a survey we sent out earlier in the year.

Yesterday, I got a really promising response back from one of the other school’s with a house system! Hopefully Ms. Post and I will be heading to Lake Ridge Academy sometime next week to talk to them about the success of their house system!

Till next time,

Ali Gole

  1. Wow, it is so great that you are trying to improve the house system! It is a really great idea to unite different parts of the community, but unfortunately it has had a rough couple of years.
Have you identified what needs to be changed in order to improve the system? I know schools like US have more houses so less kids which puts more (good) pressure on students to participate, I think that sort of change could positively impact Hawken's house system.
Will the community service aspects of the house system change? There are so many different routes that can be taken in that regard. I think the unfortunate lack of enthusiasm for the house system really affects our service days in a negative way, so that could be an interesting aspect of the system to explore.
This is a great project and I really would like to see the long term affects this project because the house system could really encourage school spirit and that is something Hawken is lacking. Please continue to update us because I think this project could really revive Alex Dobay's dream and unite our community in a way it has not been together in a number of years. Let us know how your meeting with Lake Ridge Academy goes!
