Today I did some
independent work on developing new house leader job descriptions. In the past
it has been pretty unclear what exactly the obligations of house leaders and
faculty leaders are. After a ton of research, these are just a few of the new
descriptions I have come up with:
- “Leaders show up” –Ali Gole
- Must be available to attend all house leader meetings during flex Activities Block
- Must attend mandatory leader retreat Saturday, August 16, 2014
- Must have and be willing to constantly promote school & house spirit
- Must come prepared to morning House Meetings with notes/memorized information of all announcements to be made
- Clearly communicate with other leaders a detailed agenda for house meetings
- Be creative and enthusiastic about designing and creating house meeting agendas
- Be willing to coordinate house specific community service initiatives
- Senior leaders much be prompt and enthusiastically willing to manage morning meeting
- Must be willing to step outside of comfort zone at the helm of the house system
- Must be willing to devote time to organizing, planning and executing activities that don’t pertain to your specific house like: Chrismahaunakwanzikah, House Talent Show, Giant Relay etc.
- House leaders must organize at least one fundraiser per year
Till
next time,
Ali
Personally I believe the success of a house and the house system relies heavily on ALL the house leaders. I know that I enjoyed house meetings much more when my leaders we enthusiastic and truly cared about the house, not just something to put on their college apps. It may just be me but I noticed a large shift in one house in particular since freshman year that as the leaders stepped up the enthusiasm the house members cared more, participated more and did better in the house competition.
ReplyDeleteI think the last point "one fundraiser per year" is a really interesting requirement because house leaders are suppose to set an example, hence why they are called leaders, but by requiring more focus on service people will then start to take the service aspect of the house system more serious.
I also agree that house leaders need to be willing to put in the time. As a close friend of a house leader I have found myself setting up for other house's weeks because the leaders are unwilling to do so.
Better leaders, better houses. This is great work, Al.
